The case of a five-year-old girl raped and thrown outside a local hospital in a critical state in Lahore, Pakistan on September 12, 2013, has shaken a country already reeling under terrorism and religious extremism. A series of countrywide protests had already taken place to demand justice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government for the child who was apparently kidnapped outside her house by more than one person.
While the child lies in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, psychologically and physically brutalized, the Punjab police have failed to apprehend the rapists.
The Cecil and Iris Chaudhry Foundation, an independent, non-government, non-profit organization, is aggressively pursuing the rape case and is organizing a mass rally in Lahore on September 21, 2013 at Charing Cross, Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam at 3 pm to demand justice for the raped child.
Though Pakistan signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on December 12, 1990, it is not enforceable and cannot be invoked in local courts for lack of supporting legislation.
The Cecil and Iris Chaudhry Foundation, stated in a press release that it is entreating nationally and internationally to support its cause to demand justice and effective legislation against child rape.
