On the occasion of the UN-mandated World Autism Awareness Day, held at the ITA Centre, Guwahati, city-based Assam Autism Foundation (AAF) was marking the completion of 10 years of their service, being the pioneer organisation working dedicatedly on issues related to autism.
The theme of the programme was “Autism on Wheels”, the cycle as the symbol for greener planet. A unique cultural programme commenced by an integrated performance by Assam Autism Foundation children and Presentation Kindergarden, Chenikuthi to pave the path for social inclusion. Children of Briz Dance Academy, very artfully presented a dance to give the message that children of Autism is not alone. Jyoti Niketan Blind School, sang in unison and played on the keyboard in spite of them being visually challenged.
The closing act of the cultural evening was to harmonize music, art and form. Music translating to colour and colour to form, staged by Nise Meruno, ambassador of Yamaha along with friends from well known rock band Alobo Naga, Nagaland a beautiful piano recital. Inspired by the music, Artist, Pallavi Barooah did a live painting and Madhumita Buragohain took forward this inspiration in the form of artistic garments made out of paint, paper and plastic followed by a fashion show.
“Commitment to the cause of autism is a social responsibility for all”, said Mr H Sarma, IAS, Commssioner of Disabilty, Govt. of Assam, while speaking as the Chief Guest. “The growing evidence of environmental pollutants being incriminated as a cause of autism, reiterates the need to strive for a greener planet, thus stated by Dr R N Dubey, IFS, Chairman of the Assam Pollution Control Board, while speaking as the Guest of Honour. Special invitee Zerifa Wahid, acclaimed actor attended, spoke of the children of Autism. The event was well attended and supported by ASDMA, Amalgamated Plantations, National Trust and Topcem, among others.
