The Gurkha’s Daughter, Prajwal Parajuly’s bestselling collection of short stories, has been longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize 2013. The Dylan Thomas Prize is awarded to the best published literary work in English by a young writer and is the world’s largest literary prize of its kind. The longlist pits Prajwal against eleven other writers for the £30,000 prize.
In September 2011, Quercus Books created international attention by securing the rights to Parajuly'sfirst two books: the short-story collection The Gurkha's Daughter and the novel LAND WHERE I FLEE. Quercus editor-in-chief Jon Riley said of Parajuly's work: "The colour and intensity of Prajwal Parajuly's language, and the world he peoples his work with, make him an astonishingly accomplished young writer and one we are excited to be publishing." At the time, Parajuly, from Gangtok, Sikkim, was the youngest writer signed by Quercus, and also among the youngest Indians to achieve a multi-national book deal.
Post-publication, highpraise has come to Parajuly from all corners of the world – from the UAE to Ireland, from South Africa to the UK and from India to Germany. International media have lauded Parajuly's work, referring to him as the "next big thing in South Asian fiction,” and his book “as the best collection of short stories you have read in a while.” In addition, Parajuly has been described as the harbinger of the resurgence of the short story. The Gurkha’s Daughter has also been a Number One bestseller in India and South Africa.
Parajuly’s new book, LAND WHERE I FLEE, is scheduled for publication in November 2013.
