Pork, fish, eggs, meat and milk form part of the staple food of the people of the Northeast India as such poultry farming and pig rearing also provide gainful employment. However, these are largely confined to backyard rearing and commercialization is yet to make a dent in the region. In addition to this, there is lack of advanced technology, inadequate cold storage facilities and processing equipment, particularly at the farm level, act as a major constraint in enabling this sector to take a quantum jump in production and productivity.
Considering all these issues Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) the nodal chamber for the Northeastern states strongly felt that a big and strong platform is required for all stakeholders to share knowledge, technology and provide market linkages so associated with the Ministry of Food Processing and Industries, Government of India to organize the Livestock and Poultry India Summit in Guwahati at Hotel Nakshatra, Beltola on February 22, 2013 at Guwahati and a hands on training and farmers meet on Piggery at the National Research Centre on Pig, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Rani, Kamrup, Assam.
The main objective of the summit is strengthening forward-backward linkages, modernization of processing technology, cold chain logistics, capacity building, research & development, fostering innovation and market development in the dairy andlivestock and poultry and dairy sector,
Following are the focused sector of the summit
Livestock – National livestock policy, breed improvement, farm practices & livelihood
Poultry – hatchery practices, processing, yield, competitive feed / fodder etc
Meat Processing – modern abattoirs, high tech slaughtering, optimizing output
Dairying – milk production optimization, dairy processing, infrastructure & marketing

India is otherwise known as the Oyster of the global dairy industry being the highest milk producer in the entire globe, with opportunities galore to the entrepreneurs globally but the potential market of the Northeast is yet to be explored. The dairy industry in India has been witnessing rapid growth with the liberalized economy provides more opportunities for local dairy farmers and milk producers to release the full potential of this industry in this region. The Northeast region boasts of national award winning Sitajhakala Dugdh Utpadak Samabai Samity, WAMUL, DIMUL, KOMUL, Sikkim Co-Operative Milk Producers’ Union.
