Swagata Yadavar, a senior journalist delivered a lecture on 'Health Journalism' to nursing and paramedical students and faculty of the NEPNI group of Institutions. This premier institution is located in Singimari in Kamrup district.
Yadavar is an Ahmedabad based journalist with more than ten years of experience covering healthcare, gender, sanitation and other development themes for print and digital media in India. Previously, she has worked at ThePrint, IndiaSpend and The Week magazine. She has won 2018 June E Beidler Cancer Journalism Award by American Association for Cancer Research for a three part series on India's cancer care crisis, 2018 Cancer World Journalism Award by European School of Oncology, 2017 Press Institute of India and International Committee of Red Cross's Special Award for best article on a humanitarian subject, 2014 Press Club's Red Ink Award and 2013 Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitivity.
Yadavar urged the students to try to understand the health related issues in media and even think of a career as a health communicator. 'Health is an important part of our lives and it's important to write about these issues in the media.'
Speaking on the occasion, senior journalist Teresa Rehman urged the students to read the newspaper regularly and try to understand and analyse the health related issues.
Addressing the gathering, Rashida Begum, the administrator of NEPNI said, "It is an important topic that students of nursing and paramedical sciences should know how to deal with health issues in the media."
